Alas Women give Thailand a scare, fall in five to remain winless

Alas Pilipinas pulled off another impressive performance and pushed the mighty Thailand to its limit before yielding a 17-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-18, 10-15 loss to remain winless in the first leg of the 2026 Women’s SEA V. Cup at the Dong Anh Gymnasium in Hanoi on Saturday, Aug. 1.

Powered by Alyssa Solomon and Bella Belen, the Nationals fought back to within two points, 11-9, after Thailand nearly squandered a 9-5 lead in the deciding set.

The Thais, however, regained their composure and closed out the match before the Filipinas could complete the comeback.

It was the Nationals’ second straight defeat after a four-set loss to Vietnam ahead of their match against Indonesia on Sunday, Aug. 2, for a shot a bronze. Thailand, for its part, remain flawless at 2-0 and is set to face Vietnam on the same day.

The Filipina spikers bounced back from a dismal opening set by leveling the game at 1-all -- big thanks to Solomon and Fifi Sharma, who delivered the goods in the pivotal stretch.

The Thais were quick to regroup to claim the third set with ease, but the Nationals refused to give up and forged a decider.

However, it served to be Alas’ last stand.
