Ex-senator Revilla released from QC jail after Sandiganbayan grants bail petition

Former senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. walked free on Friday, July 31, after posting a P1-million cash bond following a ruling by the Sandiganbayan Third Division that allowed his temporary liberty while he faces trial over an alleged anomalous flood control project in Bulacan.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said Revilla was released from the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory at 6:14 p.m.
BJMP spokesperson Supt. Jayrex Joseph Bustinera said the former lawmaker was freed after the anti-graft court issued a release order and he posted the required bail.
Revilla had been detained at the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory since January along with his co-accused in the malversation case involving a P92.8-million flood control project in Pandi, Bulacan.
The project is alleged to have been implemented on a site that investigators found to be an empty lot with no physical structure.
In granting Revilla's petition for bail, the Sandiganbayan ruled that the prosecution failed to meet the standard required to deny provisional liberty.
The anti-graft court said it granted the petition “for failure of the prosecution to establish that the evidence of his guilt is strong, insofar as it pertains to the charge of malversation through falsification of public documents.”
The ruling, however, did not extend to Revilla's co-accused.
The Sandiganbayan denied the bail petitions of DPWH Bulacan First District engineers Brice Hernandez, Jaypee Mendoza, Emelita Juat, and Arjay Domasig, as well as accountant Juanito Mendoza and cashier Christina Pineda.
The court said their petitions were denied “on account of the strong evidence of their guilt as to the charge of malversation.”
The criminal case against Revilla and his co-accused will continue despite his release on bail.
