DOH chief denies casino gambling allegations, says hotel visit was for official meeting

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Jose “Brix” Pujalte Jr. on Friday, July 31, denied allegations that he gambled at casinos after a complaint accusing him of doing so was reportedly filed before the Presidential Complaint Center in Malacañang.
In a statement, Pujalte vehemently denied the allegations contained in a circulating letter claiming that he had been staying at casinos to gamble.
“Mariing itinatanggi ni Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Jose “Brix” Pujalte Jr. ang paratang sa kumakalat na liham ukol sa diumano’y pamamalagi ng Kalihim sa mga casino para magsugal (Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Jose ‘Brix’ Pujalte Jr. strongly denies the allegations contained in a circulating letter claiming that he had been staying at casinos to gamble),” the DOH said.
Pujalte clarified that on July 20, he had been invited to attend an official meeting with officials from Masbate and Sorsogon at a hotel.
According to the DOH chief, the gathering focused solely on providing assistance to public hospitals in the two provinces.
“Paglilinaw ni Sec. Pujalte Jr., noong Hulyo 20, naimbitahan siya para dumalo sa isang opisyal na pagpupulong kasama ang mga opisyal ng Masbate at Sorsogon sa isang hotel (Secretary Pujalte clarified that on July 20, he had been invited to attend an official meeting with officials from Masbate and Sorsogon at a hotel),” the statement read.
“Tanging ang pagbibigay ng tulong sa mga pampublikong ospital sa rehiyon ang pinag-usapan sa naturang pagtitipon,” the statement read (The meeting focused solely on providing assistance to public hospitals in the region),” it added.
On July 13, President Marcos appointed Pujalte as DOH secretary following the resignation of Dr. Teodoro Herbosa.
