Boy, aunt hacked in Marikina; suspect nabbed

A 39‑year‑old man was arrested for hacking and injuring a 10‑year‑old boy and his aunt in Marikina City on Wednesday night, July 29.

On Thursday, July 30, the Marikina City Police Station said the suspect, identified as “Oben,” was arrested in an intensified follow‑up operation and manhunt ordered by Mayor Maan Teodoro.
Investigators said the victims -- a 28‑year‑old woman and her 10‑year‑old nephew -- were seated outside their residence in Purok 6, Barangay Malanday, with a witness at around 8:30 p.m. when the suspect suddenly arrived and, without provocation, repeatedly hacked them with a bladed weapon.
The witness fled to avoid being attacked and sought help from Barangay Malanday personnel.
Authorities reported the woman sustained three hack wounds to the head and right hand, while the boy suffered a head wound.
The victims were rushed to the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (ARMMC), while the suspect fled with the weapon.
He is now detained at the Marikina Custodial Facility, where police are preparing charges of two counts of frustrated murder and resistance and disobedience to a person in authority.
Mayor Teodoro said the victims were later transferred to Marikina Valley Medical Center for immediate treatment, with the local government covering their hospital expenses.
“Galit tayo sa nangyari. Walang lugar ang ganitong klase ng karahasan sa Marikina. Sisiguraduhin natin na mananagot siya sa batas. Sa ating mga kababayan, makakaasa kayo na hindi natin palalampasin ang ganitong krimen (We are outraged by what happened. There is no place for this kind of violence in Marikina. We will ensure that the suspect is held accountable under the law. To our fellow Marikeños, rest assured that we will not let this crime go unpunished),” the mayor said.
“Kaagapay tayo ng pamilya at ng buong Marikina sa pagkamit ng hustisya (We stand with the family and the entire Marikina community in the pursuit of justice),” she added.
The Marikina CPS assured the public of its commitment to uphold the rule of law, ensure public safety, and conduct impartial investigations.
“We also express our gratitude to the local government of Marikina, the responding police personnel, and the members of the community whose cooperation contributed to the successful apprehension of the suspect,” it said.
