ROS takes on Magnolia; Meralco, Ginebra renew rivalry

A pair of marquee duels between teams jockeying for better positions in Group B standings are in store for PBA fans in the Season 50 Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday, July 31.
The exciting twinbill opens up with the intriguing collision between Rain or Shine and Magnolia in the first offering at 5:15 p.m. before Barangay Ginebra and Meralco rekindle their rivalry in the second game at 7:30 p.m.
The outcome of both contests will have serious implications to the overall picture of the Group B standings at the end of the first round of eliminations.
As it stands, only Phoenix has been able to separate itself from the rest of the pack with a 4-1 record followed by Rain or Shine and Meralco with similar 2-2 slates and then Blackwater with a 2-3 record.
Magnolia and Ginebra are currently in unfamiliar territory at the bottom standings with 1-2 slates.
A win by Ginebra and Magnolia would immediately put them inside the Magic 4 and should be a fitting prelude to their looming collision in the Manila Clasico.
But both ROS and Meralco surely wouldn’t allow that as they also wanted to solidify their hold of their spots heading into the second round.
The Elasto Painters, for one, are aiming to extend their three-game win streak after a 0-2 start to the conference.
“I think it’s a wake-up call. After that we’ve been playing better defense saka better rebounding,” Guiao said of the rough start.
“Hindi ako worried about our offense, eh. I think we’ve scored more than 100 points every game. So it’s really just playing good defense, rebounding. When we get our rebounds, we’re able to run,” he added.
Magnolia, on the other hand, is looking to string together its first win streak of the season.
Like the Elasto Painters, the Bolts, meanwhile, are also hoping to be more consistent after mixed results in their first four games.
To be fair, Meralco played their first four assignments in only a span of nine games.
The Kings, on the other hand, are looking for more support for import Riley Grigsby, with head coach Tim Cone calling out his locals to step up.
