First Lady inspects Coconut Palace restoration ahead of ASEAN Summit

First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos inspected the ongoing restoration of the Coconut Palace at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex in Pasay City on July 28 as preparations continue for the 49th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders' Summit in November.

The Coconut Palace is among the official venues that will host activities during the regional gathering of ASEAN leaders and delegates.

In a social media post after her ocular visit, the First Lady said the country is "almost ready to welcome the world."

She said the restored landmark will proudly showcase Filipino artistry, culture, and the warmth of our hospitality during the summit.

In a separate Facebook post, Marcos said she looked forward to seeing the iconic structure welcome foreign guests once again after its restoration.

"The Coconut Palace is getting ready to welcome the world once again," she said.

“A proud showcase of Filipino artistry, culture and the warm hospitality that makes our country so special," she added.

Photos and videos uploaded to her social media accounts showed the First Lady touring various parts of the restored building and taking photos with the staff during the ocular visit.

The Coconut Palace, located within the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex, is one of the country's best-known cultural landmarks. Built in 1978, it has long been used to host visiting dignitaries and official government functions, showcasing Filipino craftsmanship and indigenous materials.

It also served as the official office and residence of then-vice president Jejomar Binay from 2011 to 2016 before the Office of the Vice President transferred to the Quezon City Reception House under vice president Leni Robredo. The move was made after the OVP opted for a more cost-efficient office instead of continuing to lease the Coconut Palace.

The restoration forms part of the government's preparations for the Philippines' hosting of the 49th ASEAN Leaders' Summit in November.

The summit is expected to bring together heads of state and government from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, along with dialogue partners and delegates, to discuss regional cooperation, economic integration, security, and other key issues.
