Why your skin may be more stressed than you think

From UV rays and pollution to lack of sleep and emotional stress, experts explain how daily habits affect the skin and how Cetaphil's new day-and-night serum system helps protect the skin barrier

Stress is often associated with our emotional and mental wellbeing, but our skin experiences it, too. Every day, it faces a combination of environmental and lifestyle stressors that can gradually weaken the skin barrier.
From the moment we step outside, it is exposed to ultraviolet rays, pollution, heat, changing temperatures, and even blue light from digital devices. Add emotional stress, poor sleep, and an unbalanced diet, and these daily pressures can gradually weaken the skin barrier, leaving skin feeling dry, dehydrated, and more sensitive over time.
To help address these everyday stressors, Cetaphil introduces two derma-grade serums formulated to work as a 24-hour skincare system. The Daily Defense Serum protects the skin during the day by strengthening the skin barrier against environmental aggressors, while the Advanced Repair and Renew Serum supports overnight recovery, helping restore balance and resilience.

For Abe Mationg, head of marketing at Galderma, the global dermatology company behind Cetaphil, more people are taking a proactive approach to skincare instead of waiting for visible concerns to appear. "People are becoming more intentional about caring for their skin, not just reacting to damage, but helping protect it before it happens while supporting its natural ability to recover."
The new products were launched during Cetaphil's "New Era of Serums" event this July, where brand ambassador Catriona Gray joined dermatologists Dr. Gaile Robredo-Vitas, Dr. Vanika Viardo-Enriquez, and Dr. Bea Chan in discussing why skincare should adapt to the skin's changing needs throughout the day.

"Now, as the woman that I am, in my 30s, I feel like my skin is the best it's ever been," says Catriona. "It's really all about finding a skincare routine that helps support my daytime and nighttime, and I found that with Cetaphil's Daily Defense Serum and Advanced Repair and Renew Serum." She adds that the products have become staples in her routine. "I'm now on my fifth bottle. I travel everywhere with it."
Skin stress is becoming an increasingly common concern in dermatology clinics. "As dermatologists, we see these effects every day," says Dr. Gaile. "Patients tell us their skin has become more sensitive, they experience redness they've never had before, or they notice increased dehydration."
While everyday stressors cannot be completely avoided, she says the goal is to keep their effects from building up over time. "Our skin is incredibly resilient. It simply needs the right support, given at the right time," she says.
The dermatologists also emphasized the importance of protecting the skin before everyday stressors take a visible toll. Morning skincare focuses on preparing the skin for UV exposure, pollution, heat, and other environmental aggressors. At night, the skin naturally shifts into repair mode.

Daily skin stress isn't limited to environmental factors. Dr. Vanika explains that it can also stem from emotional stress and lifestyle habits. "Stress can be internal, such as emotional stress and lack of sleep, or environmental, including UV exposure, pollution, and blue light. When we're under stress, the body's inflammatory response increases. This can weaken the skin barrier, reduce its natural moisturizing factors, and contribute to dryness and sensitivity."
To support the skin during the day, the Daily Defense Serum combines niacinamide with triple hyaluronic acid to help strengthen the skin barrier while providing lasting hydration. At night, the Advanced Repair and Renew Serum pairs Gallic-AOX Technology with Pro-Vitamin B5, Cica, Bifida Ferment, and triple hyaluronic acid to help soothe the skin, replenish moisture, and support its natural overnight renewal process.
Dr. Bea explains that skincare is a long-term investment rather than a quick fix. "It's less of a band-aid solution and more about sustainably strengthening the skin. It's really important to use products consistently. Over time, that helps reduce signs of skin sensitivity and supports a healthier skin barrier."
Daily stressors are part of modern life, but their effects don't have to define the skin. A consistent routine that protects the skin during the day and supports its natural repair overnight can help keep the skin barrier healthy and resilient.
