Ombudsman gives Romualdez 15 days to file counter-affidavit

The Office of the Ombudsman has given Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin Romualdez, as well as other respondents, 15 days to submit their counter-affidavits in connection with the investigation into alleged irregularities in flood control projects.
Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano confirmed on Tuesday, July 28, that the preliminary investigation team had issued the order to file counter-affidavits against Romualdez and the other respondents.
The 15-day period will begin upon their receipt of the order, Clavano said.
“When all parties have submitted [their counter-affidavits], the case will be submitted for resolution,” he added.
Romualdez, the President’s cousin, is among those being investigated in connection with the alleged flood control anomalies.

In a separate statement, the Office of the Ombudsman said it was grateful that it had been left free to carry out its constitutional mandate and follow the evidence wherever it leads, “including to those closest to the President himself.”
The statement came after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reported on the flood control investigations during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 27.
“This is how accountability is meant to function: no favor asked, none given,” the Ombudsman said.
It added that it would continue pursuing the matter “steadily, fairly and without fear or favor,” for as long as the evidence and the law allow.
The Ombudsman is among the agencies handling cases arising from investigations into alleged irregularities in the implementation of flood control projects.
