GOSSIP GIRL: Calvin Gutierrez is just getting started
Calvin Gutierrez
Every generation gets excited about discovering the next breakout star. After all, some of Philippine entertainment's biggest names first stepped into the spotlight through talent competitions before becoming household names.
Take Sarah Geronimo, who won "Star for a Night" before becoming one of Viva's brightest success stories.
Singers like Mark Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go also found fame through televised competitions, proving that a single opportunity can change a life forever.
Now, Viva has introduced another promising young artist ready to write his own success story—Calvin Gutierrez, the 21-year-old champion of "Viva's Next Big Star."
I recently had the chance to meet Calvin at Healthy Smile Dental Center along Timog Avenue, Quezon City, where he serves as one of the clinic's brand ambassadors.
Soft-spoken, polite, and refreshingly humble, he carries himself with the quiet confidence of someone who knows success is earned, not entitled.
Winning against thousands of hopefuls from all over the Philippines is no small feat, but Calvin remains remarkably grounded.
"Winning 'Viva's Next Big Star' is one of the biggest blessings and milestones of my life. More than the title, this victory represents years of dreaming, hard work, faith, and believing that anything is possible if you never give up," says Calvin.
Note that long before the confetti fell and the cameras rolled, Calvin was already putting in the work.
Like countless aspiring performers, he spent years attending auditions, workshops, and castings, learning to embrace both rejection and growth.
“My journey into showbiz started with a simple dream... to perform, inspire people, and tell stories through singing and acting," he shared. "Every audition, workshop, and opportunity taught me valuable lessons."
Today, Calvin is proudly managed by Viva Artists Agency, joining a roster that has helped shape many of the country's most recognizable performers.
For him, however, winning the competition isn't the destination—it's simply the first chapter.
"Winning 'Viva's Next Big Star' is not the end of my journey, it's only the beginning. I know there is still so much to learn, and I'm ready to embrace every opportunity and every challenge that comes my way."
Behind every rising star is often an unwavering support system, and Calvin is quick to acknowledge the people who helped him reach this milestone. He speaks warmly of his parents, who constantly reminded him to stay humble, work hard, and trust in God's perfect timing.
He also values education, believing that learning never stops, even as his entertainment career begins to take off.
As an actor, Calvin hopes to tackle roles that challenge him emotionally and allow audiences to see themselves in the stories he tells. Whether it's drama, romance, action, or comedy, he wants every performance to leave a meaningful impression.
Music also remains close to his heart. One artist he deeply admires is JK Labajo, whose authenticity and sincerity continue to inspire him.
"I don't want to become someone else," Calvin said. "I simply want to become the best version of Calvin Gutierrez."
That mindset may well become his greatest asset. While talent competitions can open doors, longevity in show business depends on discipline, perseverance, and the ability to keep evolving. Calvin seems to understand that better than most.
His advice to fellow dreamers reflects the very journey that brought him here.
"Success isn't about being perfect. It's about being willing to improve, learn, and keep moving forward despite failures. Keep believing in yourself, stay humble, work hard, and trust God's perfect timing."
Many stars have taken their first bow on the talent competition stage before becoming some of the country's biggest entertainers. Whether Calvin follows in those celebrated footsteps remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: with his humility, determination, and genuine passion for the craft, he is already off to a promising start.
