Alapag wants Marcio to stretch three-point record 'so nobody else breaks it'

The PBA great-turned-coach finally had the chance to talk to Lassiter on Sunday, July 26, just before the start of NLEX’s game against San Miguel at the Smart Araneta Coliseum

And, no, Alapag has no ill feelings whatsoever after his record of 1,250 three-point makes was broken by Lassiter. In fact, he is even urging the SMB sniper to stretch the record to as far as possible so one could even break it.

“He’s absolutely deserving of it. I even told him after the game, 'Keep going, try to stretch that record out so far so nobody else breaks it.' Nothing but the most respect for Marcio,” said Alapag after the Road Warriors’ 110-96 win over Lassiter’s Beermen.

Lassiter broke Alapag’s record on Sept. 15, 2024 and has since then kept adding more to his tally, which is now currently at 1,397 which also includes four-point makes.

No other active player has come close to Lassiter with Allan Caidic coming in third in the list with 1,242 treys, Magnolia coach LA Tenorio at fourth with 1,236, and James Yap at fifth with a 1,194 makes.

“It’s a testament to him as a player. It’s a testament to his work ethic, his consistency. No one is now the greatest shooter in PBA history. To be able to congratulate him personally, I was really looking forward to that,” Alapag said of Lassiter.

“Aside from playing a team that has really dominated the PBA for a long time, I was really looking forward to getting a chance to see Marcio. I didn’t get a chance to congratulate him personally for being the new three-point record holder,” he added.

Alapag was still in the US as part of the coaching staff of the Sacramento Kings when Lassiter broke his record
