Globe partners with Japan's KDDI to reinvent retail stores
Globe Telecom Inc. is partnering with one of Japan’s leading telecommunications companies to pursue growth opportunities in the physical retail experience in the digital era.
In a statement, Globe said it has entered into a strategic partnership with Tokyo-based KDDI Corp. to innovate its retail experience while strengthening its existing retail footprint.
This marks a major pivot for Globe after recently streamlining parts of its physical retail network as more customers adopt digital channels to access its services.
Globe President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Carl Cruz said the company is now looking not only to reopen or expand stores but also to "reinvent" the retail experience at a time when digital services reign supreme.
"Globe has always believed that growth goes hand in hand with elevating our over-all customer experience philosophy,” said Cruz.
“This strategic partnership with KDDI gives us the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s most advanced telco and digital ecosystems, while bringing Globe’s deep understanding of the Filipino customer to the table,” he added.
Under the partnership, Globe plans to apply KDDI's experience in recurring revenue models that integrate telecommunications with financial, entertainment, lifestyle, and other digital services to its market reach and customer base.
Essentially, the company wants to learn from one of Japan’s best to reimagine how its stores can continue serving as a reliable partner for its approximately 67 million mobile customers.
Globe said it aims to preserve the value of human connection, guidance, and trusted support in the retail experience even as digital adoption continues to accelerate.
“Together, we aim to explore new ways to make mobile services more relevant, retail experiences more seamless, and digital solutions more responsive to the evolving needs of Filipinos,” Cruz said.
He added that the partnership with KDDI is part of Globe's broader repositioning from a mere connectivity provider to a company also focused on creating meaningful customer experiences.
Globe earlier signed an agreement with KDDI, alongside Ayala Corp. and Mitsubishi Corp., to develop the country's first "intelligent city," with Makati identified as the pilot site.
According to KDDI, the intelligent city is designed to improve the sustainability of urban living and business activities by leveraging digital technologies and advanced connectivity.
