Flexible clothing policy issued to protect learners from dengue in La Trinidad

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The local government unit has issued an order exempting learners here from wearing shorts and skirts at school as a preventive measure against mosquito-borne illnesses.
Mayor Roderick Awingan said exposed legs and arms make children vulnerable to insect bites that may pose a health risk.
“No student shall be barred from entering school premises, attending classes, or taking exams due to non-wearing of standard uniforms, provided their attire remains clean, neat, and appropriate for educational settings,” Awingan said.
A total of 95 dengue cases were recorded from January to July, indicating an active presence of the dengue-causing mosquito, he said.
Under Executive Order 102-2026, the wearing of the standard uniform is suspended in public elementary, secondary, and senior high schools within the municipality.
Students are also advised to wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants, high socks, and closed shoes, to minimize skin exposure to mosquito bites.
Awingan encouraged private educational institutions to implement similar flexible clothing policies.
He also ordered the institutionalization of the Department of Health's "4S" strategy – search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, self-protection measures, seek early consultation, and say no to indiscriminate fogging and mandated all barangays and schools to carry out regular cleanup drives.
Meanwhile, the Baguio City Health Services Office deployed an online reporting portal for people showing influenza-like illnesses (ILIs).
Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, city health officer, said persons who have a fever of at least 38 degrees Celsius or higher and exhibiting symptoms such as cough and sore throat can report through the link bit.ly/ILI_Baguio_2026.
"This will help authorities monitor cases and support communities," she said.
She urged residents to visit the nearest District Health Center for free check-up, treatment, and medicines, if needed. (PNA)
