Text messages, graphic evidence take center stage in D4vd murder hearing

Newly revealed text messages and graphic evidence dominated Friday's preliminary hearing for singer D4vd, whose real name is David Burke, as prosecutors sought to convince a judge there is enough evidence to send him to trial over the alleged murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

Prosecutors presented text exchanges they said took place in early 2024, when Rivas Hernandez was still 13. The messages referenced an abortion, with Burke allegedly apologizing for "putting her through this."

Rivas Hernandez replied that neither of them could handle a child and that "it's for the best."
Burke then asked, "Is it mine?" to which she responded, "Of course its yours david."

According to prosecutors, the messages support their claim that Burke began sexually abusing the girl when she was 13 and he was 18. They further alleged he later killed her to prevent her from exposing years of abuse, which they argued would have derailed his rapidly rising music career.

The hearing also included photographs of Burke and Hernandez, as well as testimony about dozens of explicit images allegedly recovered from Burke's phone.

The images were not shown in court because they depicted a minor.
Reports said the victim's parents left the courtroom in tears.

Investigators testified that blood recovered from Burke's garage matched Rivas Hernandez's DNA. Her decomposed body was discovered in September 2025 inside the trunk of a Tesla registered in Burke's name, about four months after prosecutors believe she was killed.

An autopsy found two stab wounds to her torso as the cause of death. However, toxicology results and the body's advanced decomposition prevented investigators from establishing an exact time of death or ruling out a drug overdose.

Burke has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, child sexual abuse, and mutilation of a body.

Before his arrest, D4vd had emerged as one of music's fastest-rising artists, earning billions of streams with hits including "Romantic Homicide" and "Here with Me." He released his debut album, "Withered," shortly after prosecutors allege the killing took place.

The singer last performed in the Philippines on May 16, last year at the MOA Sky Amphitheatre in Pasay City.

The preliminary hearing is expected to conclude after additional testimony.
