Robin Padilla has finally addressed Angel Locsin's open letter criticizing his political views, but instead of firing back, the actor-turned-senator said he chose understanding over confrontation.

Speaking in an interview with Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI), Padilla said he and wife Mariel Padilla decided against responding publicly because they consider Locsin a friend.

"Baka may pinagdadaanan si Angel… intindihin na lang natin. Huwag na kaming sumagot o magsalita," he said, adding that his lines remain open should the actress want to talk.

Padilla also responded to Locsin's reference to his past association with leftist ideology, clarifying that while he still identifies with its ideals, he draws a clear line between political beliefs and armed struggle.

Recalling how he became close to Locsin through their shared interest in martial arts, Padilla said he had been upfront about his political leanings.

"Wala namang masama kung leftist ka. Ang masama ay kung ikaw ay may dalang baril," he said.

Locsin's open letter drew support from several personalities, including Anne Curtis, Enchong Dee, Bea Binene, and Marina Summers. Padilla, meanwhile, received public backing from his brother, actor Rommel Padilla.

In her letter, Locsin urged Padilla to use his platform more responsibly, saying public officials should be held to a higher standard because their words carry weight.

She also expressed disappointment over what she described as his repeated controversial remarks, writing that she missed "the Robin Padilla who stood up for the oppressed and fought for what he believed was right."

Despite the criticism, Padilla maintained there was no ill will toward the actress, saying he would rather understand her situation than engage in a public exchange.

As of writing, neither Locsin nor Padilla has issued further statements on the matter.
