Why are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's children dropping 'Pitt' from their names?

Why are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's children dropping their father's surname?

It's a question that keeps resurfacing every time another one of their children takes legal steps to become simply "Jolie."

And just as intriguing, why has Brad remained publicly silent about it all?

The latest to make the move is Vivienne, Angelina's youngest daughter, who, according to People, filed a petition on July 21 to legally change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. Court documents cited the reason simply as "personal."

She now joins siblings Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh, all of whom have either already dropped "Pitt" from their names or are seeking to do so.

Shiloh's petition was granted in August 2024, while Zahara's and Maddox's remain pending. Vivienne's hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 2.

Of course, no one outside the family truly knows what has transpired behind closed doors. But with four of six children distancing themselves from their father's surname, the pattern is difficult to ignore.

A source close to Angelina told People that if the public knew the full story, there would be greater sympathy for the children.

"If people knew the whole truth, they would have more sympathy for the children and respect them," the source said. "The fact they aren't speaking ill or sharing things publicly only shows their decency."

The same source insisted Angelina has long since shifted her focus.

"Angie hasn't been fighting and isn't angry. She just wants everyone to heal."

That, perhaps, is where some observers can't help but pause.

Healing is a beautiful word. But when children choose to legally shed their father's name one by one, it inevitably raises another question: Can wounds this deep really be healing, or are they simply finding a different way to show themselves?

Brad, for his part, has not publicly commented on his children's name changes.

The former Hollywood power couple split in 2016 after an alleged altercation aboard a private plane involving Pitt and one of their children, an incident that prompted investigations by authorities. Pitt was never charged with a crime, and both the FBI and Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services closed their investigations without taking action against him. Since then, the two have been locked in years of legal battles over custody and the French winery Château Miraval, among other disputes.

Although Angelina and Brad finalized their divorce in 2024 after eight years of legal proceedings, the ripple effects of their separation continue to make headlines, with each new name change adding another layer to one of Hollywood's most closely watched family stories.
