Negros Occidental LGUs cancel classes due to bad weather

BACOLOD CITY – Several local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental, including this highly-urbanized city, suspended classes on Friday, July 24, due to inclement weather from tropical cyclone Kiyapo enhanced by the southwest monsoon.

Mayor Greg Gasataya announced that classes on all levels were suspended upon the recommendation of the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO).

Schools were encouraged to shift to modular distance learning performance tasks and projects to ensure that learning competencies are met.

Other LGUs that cancelled classes were Silay City, Bago City, Talisay City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Isabela, Pulupandan, Hinoba-an, E.B. Magalona, Valladolid, Cauayan, and Don Salvador Benedicto.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council issued a heavy rainfall warning at 2 p.m., placing Hinoba-an, Sipalay City, Candoni, Cauayan, Ilog, and Kabankalan City under red warning due to serious flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas.

Flooding is also possible in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas under yellow warning in the areas of Bago City, Pulupandan, Valladolid, Bacolod City, Murcia, Talisay City, Silay City, E.B. Magalona, Victorias City, Himamaylan City, Isabela, Hinigaran, Binalbagan, Moises Padilla, Pontevedra, La Carlota City, San Enrique, and La Castellana.

Light to moderate with occasionally heavy rains are expected over Escalante City, Toboso, and Calatrava.

The public and the DRRMOs concerned were advised to monitor the weather.
