Lovi Poe, Lav Diaz film 'Makikiraan Po' heads to Venice Film Festival

Lovi Poe is making another major mark behind the camera as "Makikiraan Po (Let Us Through, Dear Ancestors)," the latest film from internationally acclaimed Filipino auteur Lav Diaz, heads to one of the world's most prestigious film festivals.

The historical drama has been selected to make its world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival this September, with Poe serving as executive producer through her company, C'est Lovi Productions.

Sharing the news on social media Friday, Poe wrote, "Grateful to everyone who helped bring this story to life."

The Venice selection marks another milestone in Poe's growing work as a producer, reflecting her commitment to backing Filipino stories with global appeal while continuing her career as one of the country's most recognizable actresses.

Produced by Bianca Balbuena and Montgomery Blencowe and executive produced by Poe through her C'est Lovi Productions banner, "Makikiraan Po" is a collaboration between C'est Lovi Productions, Epicmedia Productions, and Diaz's Sine Olivia Pilipinas, bringing together one of Philippine cinema's most celebrated filmmakers with a producer-actress increasingly championing Filipino stories on the international stage.

Set in 1617 during the Spanish colonial era, "Makikiraan Po" explores the enduring wounds of colonization, religious conversion, and indigenous resistance.

The story follows Padre Enciso, played by Bart Guingona, a Spanish friar and encomendero tasked with spreading Catholicism while overseeing the construction of a church. He orders his son, Dungwen (Christian Bables), to transport valuable limestone through territories where native communities continue to resist colonial rule.

The ensemble cast also features Ronnie Lazaro, Isabel Sandoval, Yul Servo, Hazel Orencio, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, and other notable Filipino actors.

For Diaz, the selection continues a remarkable relationship with Venice, where his films have been regular fixtures over the years.

He won the festival's coveted Golden Lion in 2016 for "Ang Babaeng Humayo," and "Makikiraan Po" becomes the latest addition to his distinguished filmography to premiere before an international audience.

The film will screen in the Venice Open section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 2 to 12.
