Facebook Live leads PCG to rescue of 240 flood-hit residents in Sarangani

20 more people rescued in Guimaras, Antique

A Facebook Live posted by a concerned citizen helped the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) quickly respond to flooding in Maasim, Sarangani, leading to the rescue of about 240 residents from 60 families as Tropical Storm Kiyapo continued to enhance the southwest monsoon (habagat).
The PCG said its personnel monitored and verified the flooding through the livestream before immediately proceeding to Purok Riverside in Barangay Kablacan on Thursday, July 23.
Upon arrival, the Coast Guard Disaster Response Group (DRG) assisted residents in evacuating while continuously monitoring the rising floodwaters.
Personnel from the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Colon were also deployed to Kumaba Bridge in Barangay Kanalo after the bridge became temporarily impassable due to continuous heavy rains and rising water.
The PCG said around 60 families, or about 240 individuals, were safely evacuated to a secure area. No deaths or injuries were reported.
The operation was carried out under the PCG's Intensified Community Assistance, Awareness, Response, and Enforcement (iCARE) campaign, which aims to strengthen assistance to communities during disasters.
Meanwhile, PCG personnel also rescued three families composed of 20 individuals who were stranded by floodwaters in Guimaras and Antique on Friday, July 24.
In Sitio Nabagatan, Barangay Poblacion in Jordan, Guimaras, rescuers evacuated a family of 10 after they became trapped by rising floodwaters.
Another two families composed of 10 individuals were rescued along the boundary of Barangays Guintas and Funda in Hamtic, Antique after rapidly rising floodwaters cut off their evacuation route.
The PCG said its personnel remain on standby and continue conducting monitoring and evacuation assistance in flood-affected communities to ensure the safety of residents as heavy rains persist.
