DAVAO CITY – The provincial government of Cotabato is implementing measures to assist motorists traversing the temporary alternate route in Arakan, Cotabato town following the closure of a portion of the Bukidnon-Davao Highway in Barangay Marilog Proper here due to a landslide on Saturday, July 18.
Cotabato Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) chief Abril Espadera said that the provincial government is taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of motorists passing through the back roads of Arakan.
Espadera said that these measures, which are being implemented in coordination with the local government of Arakan, guides travelers passing through the alternate route.
“This is to avoid getting lost along the route and might lead them to other parts of Arakan,” he said, adding that the provincial government will install signages to guide motorists on the Davao-Bukidnon Road-Datu Ladayon-Katipunan-Campo Uno Road.
Datu Ladayon and Katipunan are barangays of Arakan while Campo Uno is a sitio of Katipunan.
Espadera said that this route is only open to light vehicles and Datu Ladayon has deployed personnel to assist motorists passing through the nine-kilometer detour.
He said the local government of Arakan and the provincial government are considering an additional alternative in some portions of the route to make it convenient among motorists.
“There are portions of the road that only a single vehicle can pass at a time. Thus, we are planning to open another route to avoid congestion,” Espadera said.
The road slip caused significant damage to a portion of the concrete pavement, with a section collapsing and rendering it impassable.
With the temporary road closure, the DPWH-Davao region advised heavy trucks to use the Maramag-Carmen-Kabacan-Digos-Davao Road.
Espadera said the provincial government has prepared for the influx of motorists passing through barangay roads in Arakan. “We need to prepare the road for the influx of passing vehicles because it was not designed to accommodate a lot of vehicles for a longer period, these are just barangay roads,” he said.
With the opening of the barangay roads, the PDRRMO chief said that the provincial government will implement quarantine security measures on vehicles transporting livestock and poultry.
The Bukidnon-Davao Highway is a vital link to the economy of Bukidnon, Cotabato, and Davao.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon inspected the landslide site in Sitio Marahan on July 23 and said they are eyeing both temporary and long-term solutions.
Dizon added that they are focusing on temporary roads that could be used as soon as possible. Construction work for a temporary two-lane road will start on Monday, July 27.
He said they will construct slope protection for both sides of the road. “At the same time, gagawa tayo ng mas matagalang solusyon. So ‘yun medyo matagal-tagal ‘yun (We will create a long-term solution),” Dizon said.
