Classes remain suspended in Zamboanga City due to bad weather

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Classes on all levels, both in public and private schools in this city, remain suspended Friday due to inclement weather.
Mayor Khymer Olaso ordered the extension of the suspension of classes that began Thursday, as the city continues to experience cloudy skies and scattered rain showers brought about by the southwest monsoon.
“I will not take the risk to allow children to go to school amid such weather conditions. For their safety, they should stay at home and do their homework,” Olaso said.
He advised the public to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures amid the unstable weather conditions.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that occasional rain will persist over the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi due to the southwest monsoon.
PAGASA added that flash floods or landslides may happen due to moderate to heavy rains.
Winds will be moderate to strong from west to southwest with moderate to rough seas.
Currently, several streets in the city's downtown area are flooded due to continuous rain.
Olaso said that in case of emergency, the public may contact the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) through hotline numbers 911, 0966-731-6242, and 0955-004-3682.
Meanwhile, the Isabela City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ICDRRMO) in Basilan province also announced that classes on all levels, both in public and private schools, are suspended Friday due to bad weather.
Students were advised to stay home with their families and monitor PAGASA updates. (PNA)
