The camp of super featherweight title contender Charly Suarez is asking the World Boxing Organization to impose the mandatory rematch between the Filipino boxer and unified Mexican champion Emanuel Navarrete following his successful ring return after a year of layoff.
Suarez made his bid for the unified WBO and International Boxing Federation (IBF) titles currently, even more apparent when he destroyed Manuel Avila in just one round to cement his status as the mandatory challenger.
His promoter, Samson Lewkowicz then called WBO to quickly order the negotiation for the rematch of the two fighters, whose first duel ended up in a controversial no contest.
“By destroying Manuel Avila, Charly Suarez proved once again he is the top contender to Emanuel Navarrete,” said Lewkowicz
“And we ask the WBO to enforce their order and direct his team to start negotiating for a rematch,” he added.
The call from Suarez’s camp came on the heels of reports linking Navarrete to a potential unification against WBC title holder Oshaquie Foster.
“Charly’s dream is to be world champion, and we feel he deserves another shot at the title,” echoed Suarez’s manager and trainer Delfin Boholst.
“Avila was a capable opponent, and Charly had no problem with him. We are ready for another shot at the world title,” he added.
It was not the first time that WBO ordered a rematch between the two fighters with the sanctioning body even ordering a second installment of their fight immediately after the review of the outcome of their first bout.
Navarrete, however, went for a unification with Eduardo Nunez, instead, to take the IBF crown.
Suarez, who improved to 19-0 after defeating Avila, might already be a world champion if not for the referee's ruling in his first bout against Navarrete. The official determined that the bloody cut sustained by the defending champion was caused by an accidental clash of heads rather than a punch, a decision that ultimately prevented Suarez from claiming the title.
The bout was stopped by the doctor, allowing Navarrete to come away with a technical decision win. A review of the fight footage, however, confirmed that the cut was from a punch from Navarrete and the outcome should have been a technical knockout win in favor of the Filipino.
The California State Athletic Commission, however, overturned the outcome to no contest.
