Cat owner to file raps vs 'killer' of pet

SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan – A pet cat was fatally shot in Barangay Coliling here on Sunday, July 19.
The feline’s owner – Jeremy de Guzman, 25 – is preparing to file legal action as investigation on the incident continues.
De Guzman said he reported the incident to the police before the case was referred to the barangay.
A suspect was identified, De Guzman said.
The suspect went to the police on July 22 and faced De Guzman. The suspect denied any involvement in the shooting.
Despite the suspect’s denial, De Guzman said he is awaiting the necessary certificates and documents from the barangay to formally pursue legal action.
De Guzman has sought assistance from the Animal Kingdom Foundation and Raffy Tulfo in Action public service program for possible legal and public support.
The cat, Patrick, was an offspring of a stray cat rescued by De Guzman.
He said they are known for caring for rescued animals, especially cats and dogs, which they consider part of the family.
"Lumaki kaming mapagmahal sa mga hayop. Para sa amin, hindi lang sila alagang hayop. Parte sila ng pamilya. Kinakausap namin sila at inaalagaan na parang sariling anak," De Guzman said.

Animal welfare advocates slammed the incident and called for accountability. They reminded the public that acts of cruelty against animals are punishable under the Animal Welfare Act.
