Manila Council honors Mayor Isko after city wins global GIS Award

The Manila City Council has formally recognized Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso following the capital’s recent international award, passing a resolution that highlights data driven governance as a growing pillar of public service.
The 13th City Council commended Domagoso after Manila received the 2026 Special Achievement in GIS Award from Esri, a leading authority in geographic information systems.

Authored by SK Federation President and ex officio Councilor Juliana Rae “Yanyan” Ibay, the resolution highlights how Manila’s investment in data and mapping technology has strengthened responsive governance, particularly in disaster preparedness.

At the center of the recognition is the Manila Innovation Integrated GIS and Data Hub, a platform under the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department that consolidates location-based data to support urban planning, infrastructure monitoring, and emergency response.

City officials framed the resolution not just as a ceremonial gesture, but as an acknowledgment of a shift in how Manila manages risks and delivers services, using real-time information to guide decisions on the ground.

During deliberations, council members pointed to early moves by the administration to invest in disaster-response tools despite limited resources, including the use of emerging technologies that can aid in large-scale emergencies.

Manila was the only awardee from the Philippines, selected among 197 organizations worldwide out of more than 100,000 Esri clients.

The council said the recognition affirms the direction the city has taken in strengthening disaster readiness and public safety, adding that it will continue to support measures that make services faster, more efficient, and better equipped to respond to crises.
