Lance Carr slams alleged exploitation of Rene Baterbonia's death for content, fake news

Viva actor Lance Carr has alleged that some content creators are using the name of his former teammate, Rene Baterbonia, to gain clout and produce what he believes are misleading or false online content following the latter's death.

Speaking to ABS-CBN News during the media conference for the Viva All Star Games 2026 in Quezon City, Carr expressed frustration over what he described as the spread of fake news surrounding Baterbonia.

"Ang daming fake news, ang daming tao na pinagkakakitaan. It's very outrageous. Very... I don't know how to describe it. It's very inhumane for me," he said.

Carr also appealed to the public to allow Baterbonia to "rest" and to respect his grieving family.

"Just let the person rest na lang," he said.

While saying he supports calls for justice, Carr claimed that, in his opinion, some people appear to be taking advantage of the tragedy by creating content about Baterbonia for online engagement.

"Yung family, maiintindihan mo 'yung family... Pero 'yung ibang mga tao kasi, parang feeling ko mema na lang 'yung mga ginagawang content about him," he added.

Carr recalled knowing Baterbonia during his college years at Ateneo de Davao University, where they occasionally trained together and played exhibition games while Baterbonia served as captain of the school's high school basketball team.

"Actually, when I was in Ateneo Davao nung college, siya po 'yung captain ng high school. So, nakakasama rin namin po sila mag-ensayo dati and we played na rin sa mga exhibition games," he said.

Carr made the remarks during the launch of the Viva All Star Games 2026, which will feature a basketball match between Team Viva One and Team Viva Records, along with a cheerdance competition.

Gab Lagman will lead Team Viva One, joined by Wilbert Ross, Lance Carr, Joseph Marco, Jerome Ponce, Rabin Angeles, Jairus Aquino, Marco Gallo, Kyosu Guinto, PJ Rosario, Jac Abellana, Dann Aquino, and Martin Venegas.

Team Viva Records, meanwhile, will be captained by Arthur Nery, alongside Adie, Rob Deniel, Amiel Sol, Matthaios, Migo Valid, Nik Makino, Zeke Abella, Lesther Abano, Eugene Layug, Jeremy G, Juan Caoile, and Steven of Cuatro.
