'First Light' explores humanity, spirituality, and environmental advocacy through cinema

Local cinema celebrated the Philippine premiere of “First Light” at the Ayala Museum, Makati City, on June 22, 2026. The event featured a film vernissage highlighting creativity, culture, and environmental advocacy.
Presented by Clou Media Productions and co-presented by Sustina and Asia Society Philippines, the special screening marked the debut of the award-winning Philippine-Australian film after its run in international cinemas.

Beyond celebrating the film's homecoming, the vernissage also marked the launch of “First Light's” Impact Campaign, an initiative led by Sustina in partnership with Ayala Foundation and Ayala Museum that seeks to translate the film's environmental message into concrete action.
At the heart of “First Light” is a question: What does it mean to protect something, a place, a person, or a way of life, in the face of inevitable loss? Rather than offering simple answers, the film presents nature as both sanctuary and storyteller, suggesting that healing begins by reconnecting with the land that sustains communities.
In an interview, Sustina Executive Director Anna Reyes said creative projects and storytelling play an important role in making sustainability more relevant to everyday life.
“It's really nice to be able to bring it back to the ground but also to have this avenue of storytellers and highlighting how important stories are in actually defending and making sustainability relevant again or integrated again in our life,“ she said.

During the post-screening discussion, the filmmakers shared how “First Light” evolved from a deeply personal story into a cross-cultural exploration of faith, identity, decolonization, and humanity's relationship with nature. Writer-director James J. Robinson said that while the film examines the institutional legacies of colonialism and religion, it also highlights the enduring values of compassion, forgiveness, and community.
Producer Gabrielle Pearson and creative producer Emmanuel Santos reflected on the years-long collaboration between Australian and Filipino artists, saying the Philippines’ indigenous knowledge, mythology, and pre-colonial traditions helped shape the film's visual language and storytelling.
Cast members also spoke about how portraying their characters prompted personal reflections on faith, mentorship, and hope, while underscoring the importance of bridging generations and cultures through filmmaking.
A key focus of the discussion was the film's Impact Campaign, which the filmmakers described as an extension of “First Light's” message. Rather than ending with the credits, the campaign aims to support the conservation of the Masungi Georeserve watershed, where much of the film was shot. The team said the initiative reflects its commitment to "giving back to the land that gave to us," using the film as a platform to support environmental conservation.
Representatives from the Masungi Georeserve Foundation welcomed the partnership, saying the campaign would strengthen ongoing conservation efforts while encouraging audiences to view environmental protection as a shared responsibility rooted in care, resilience, and collective action.
More than marking the film's Philippine homecoming, the premiere also introduced an environmental initiative that connects “First Light's” themes with ongoing conservation efforts at the Masungi Georeserve.
