As shyly as though he was whispering a secret, Atty. Rick Blancaflor revealed, “I’ve been appointed chairman of GSIS.”
Congratulations, Rick! Though it would have been better if instead of Government Service Insurance System, it was Social Security System. If only because, as you’re aware, we your friends belong to the private sector, hence SSS.
At any rate, a promotion is a promotion, a chairman is a chairman! Rick, a member of our chow and chat Saturday group, was chief of the Intellectual Property Office when I first met him, decades ago. As of now, he is the lone government employee in our group, although another member is a retired military officer. The others are a lady who has no kitchen, only a commissary; a retired banker (he was a VP); and the father of a pianist-pedagogue.
Rick’s news triggered more happy headlines because it was the day my friend Lara and her family had just moved into their brand-new three-story house (which is also a pharmacy) in their hometown, Talavera, Nueva Ecija. Also last Saturday I bumped into Mary Ann Salcedo, my ex-partner in crime who was advertising manager when I was chief editor of another newspaper decades ago. Do joyful conversations recounting the past happen more often on Saturdays?
I keep hearing boss ECY3 reminding me, “Get out of the house every day, don’t be a homebody!” Wise words from someone who disappears most Fridays (don’t tell him I said so!).
ECY’s uncle, Benjie Yap who collects gems and other valuables, including a painting by N. Gorbachev, a nephew of the former Russian president, has a new love, or a new toy: a dazzling neon-blue gem called Paraiba, found only in Brazil, which he has set into a necklace with matching earrings. Magnificent!
Benjie looks half his age because he leaves the worrying to people whose job is to work and worry for him. When he inaugurated his gift shop, Mio at the Manila Hotel lobby, the pastor affixed the sign of the Cross not on the door but on the jamb. Benjie’s guests, including the usual suspects from our eating club, sat down for lunch at the hotel’s Champagne Room – a lovely surprise, because it looks just as romantic in the daytime!
