Elon Musk vows AI remake of 'The Odyssey' in challenge to Christopher Nolan blockbuster

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans for his artificial intelligence platform Grok Imagine to produce a full-length adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic “The Odyssey” before the end of the year, positioning the project as an alternative to Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed film adaptation.

In a post on X, Musk said the AI-generated movie would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” while sharing a short clip created using artificial intelligence that was inspired by the legendary poem.

The announcement comes after months of Musk criticizing Nolan’s version of “The Odyssey,” particularly the film’s casting choices. Musk has repeatedly questioned the inclusion of actors Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon, previously suggesting that filmmaker Mel Gibson should direct an alternative version performed entirely in Homeric Greek.

Critics of Musk’s comments have argued that his focus on the casting choices overlooks the limited screen time of the characters in Nolan’s three-hour epic. Nyong’o’s portrayal of Helen of Troy, who also plays Helen’s twin sister Clytemnestra, reportedly accounts for only a few minutes of the film, while Page’s role as Sinon has similarly limited screen presence.
The criticism, however, has not altered Musk’s position.

Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has become a major box office success, earning more than $260 million worldwide during its opening run and receiving strong reviews from critics and audiences.

Nyong’o previously defended the film’s casting, saying the ensemble represented “the world,” while Nolan dismissed early criticism of the project, saying reactions before audiences had seen the movie were “irrelevant.”

The Oscar-winning director has also expressed skepticism about artificial intelligence replacing filmmakers, arguing that human creativity and artistic intent remain central to the future of cinema.

Musk’s planned AI adaptation adds to the growing debate over the role of artificial intelligence in Hollywood, particularly as studios, filmmakers, and actors continue to weigh the technology’s potential against concerns over creativity, authorship, and the future of filmmaking.
