Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala carries the Philippine flag anew when she competes in the main draw of the prestigious US Open slated Aug. 30 to Sept. 13 in New York City.
In the official list released Wednesday, July 22, the 21-year-old Eala, who is seeded 29th, leads the charge of Southeast Asia bets alongside Janice Tjen of Indonesia (No. 38) and Thailand's Lanlana Tararudee (No. 82), and Mananchaya Sawangkaew (No. 100).
Eala, who had a splendid run in the Wimbledon Championships early this month, proved herself as the region’s top player after ruling the women’s singles event of the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand where she bested hometown bet Sawangkaew in the final. It also ended the Philippines’ 26-year gold medal drought in the said category of the biennial meet.
The US Open, the calendar's final Grand Slam, holds special memories for Filipino tennis fans after Eala notched her first-ever major Slam singles victory in last year's opening round where she escaped Denmark's Clara Tauson, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3).
Eala’s magical run, unfortunately, was immediately spoiled by Moldovan-Spanish Cristina Bucșa who dealt the Filipina wonder a 4-6, 3-6 loss in the second round.
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus is set to defend her title against other heavyweights in Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan (No. 2), Americans Jessica Pegula (No. 3) and 2023 champion Coco Gauff (No. 4), Mirra Andreeva of Russia (No. 5), and Wimbledon finalists Karolina Muchova (No. 6) and Linda Noskova of Czech Republic (No. 7).
Former winners will also join the tournament in Iga Swiatek of Poland (2022), Emma Raducanu of the United Kingdom (2021), Naomi Osaka of Japan (2020, 2018), and Bianca Andreescu of Canada (2019).
Just a few days ago, Eala flew back to the States side to kickstart her US Open buildup through several competitions in coming weeks.
