Vaquilar installed as new Diocese of Urdaneta bishop

BANTAY, Ilocos Sur – Archbishop David William Antonio of Nueva Segovia urged newly ordained Bishop Nick Argel Vaquilar of the Diocese of Urdaneta to lead with prayer, humility, and love during his Episcopal Ordination at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, Parish of Saint Augustine of Hippo, here on Tuesday, July 21.

In his homily, Antonio reflected on Vaquilar’s episcopal motto, “Domine tuus sum” (Lord, I am yours), describing it as a lifelong commitment to belong first to Jesus Christ before serving the Church.
“Before a bishop belongs to a diocese, he belongs first of all to Jesus Christ,” the archbishop said, stressing that authentic pastoral leadership begins with a deep personal relationship with Christ.
Antonio said Vaquilar’s 18 years of forming seminarians prepared him for his new mission of shepherding priests, families, young people, and the poor in the Diocese of Urdaneta.
He urged Vaquilar to embrace synodal leadership by listening to the faithful, teaching with humility, and walking closely with God’s people rather than merely administering Church affairs.
“A bishop is not a mere administrator but a gift from God called to journey with His people,” Antonio said, emphasizing that a bishop’s ministry must be rooted in prayer, contemplation, and the Gospel.
Recalling Jesus’ question to Saint Peter, “Do you love me?” Antonio said genuine Christian leadership flows from love of Christ, from which faithful service naturally follows.
Antonio prayed that Vaquilar would become “a father to every priest, a formator to seminarians, a good shepherd to families, a compassionate friend to the poor, and an encouraging guide to the youth.”
Vaquilar was ordained bishop through the imposition of hands and the Prayer of Ordination led by Orlando Cardinal Quevedo as principal consecrator with Archbishop Marlo M. Peralta of Nueva Segovia and Bishop Jacinto A. Jose of Urdaneta serving as co-consecrators.
Most Rev. Charles John Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, witnessed the event.
Appointed by Pope Leo XIV as the fourth bishop of the Diocese of Urdaneta on May 3, Vaquilar will be formally installed on July 28.
