If the only reason you’re skeptical about watching Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is “historical inaccuracies,” just know you’ll largely regret sitting this one out. Christopher is no stranger to creating epic adventures that center around the concept of time. In his films, time always plays a significant role in advancing the story. His latest near-three-hour epic, a take on Homer’s “The Odyssey,” lets viewers feel it in full effect as we follow Odysseus (Matt Damon) desperately trying to make his way back home to Ithaca.

Even with a tale many centuries old, Christopher manages to breathe fresh life into it. His work feels reminiscent of the grand scale old Hollywood productions used to have. When we witness the larger-than-life creatures like the cyclops Polyphemus or the giant group of Laestrygonians, we feel just as tiny as Odysseus’ crew. Then there’s the iconic Trojan Horse, while massive from the outside, you feel a choking tension by seeing the soldiers confined within as they wait for their time to strike. It’s a must-see on an IMAX screen if you want to find yourself fully immersed in its world.
Like every Christopher Nolan joint, the sound design is killer when heard in theaters. Every thump and clash has the room rumbling. Ludwig Göransson’s soundtrack also has you on the edge at all times, waiting for what comes next as the tension unravels onscreen. Travis Scott and James Blake serenading audiences at the end credits is also a treat for any hip-hop enthusiasts watching.

Now, when it comes to the fiery online rants about “The Odyssey’s” casting choices, the star-studded feature is filled with A-game performances that would silence the rabble. Everyone brings a stellar performance and has you feeling all kinds of ways. Sorrow over Anne Hathaway’s Penelope, worry over the dangers lurking around Tom Holland’s Telemachus, and rightful spite (or an “I can fix him!” attitude) against the sleaziness of Robert Pattinson’s Antinous. Even side characters shine, especially John Leguizamo as the blind, loyal servant Eumaeus.
Perhaps the only weak point of the film is that we aren’t given much time to know the party that makes up Odysseus’ crew. There is a slight moment where Jon Bernthal’s Menelaus tries to paint a picture of the bond their crew had, retelling the harrowing conditions within the Trojan Horse, but it still feels centered toward Odysseus more than the people he fought with.

And while we do feel for Odysseus’ men going through every harrowing condition thrown their way, it would have added even more of an impact if we got to see how they came to form their strong bond before or during the battle of Troy. Instead, at times, crew members feel more like the unfortunate non-playable characters who don’t share the same plot armor as the main character.
If some key members from Odysseus’ troupe had been given little moments to shine, then the emotional impact of the trials they go through would feel even more impactful than they already are.
Nevertheless, “The Odyssey” is a film that reminds us why a theatrical run is still a crucial part of enjoying movies. There is a joy to be felt when you hear the sudden applause from the audience when they see Odysseus powering through everything that had been hurled at him. Little gasps of horror for every lost member along the way, the “ooohs” you hear when a sassy remark cuts through the room, these are the small moments “The Odyssey” brings that make every centavo worth it.
Manila Bulletin Lifestyle was invited to the Philippine premiere of Universal Pictures’ “The Odyssey” held at the SM Mall of Asia’s IMAX Theater in Pasay City. It is now showing in regular cinemas and IMAX theaters nationwide.
