LTFRB starts to recompute fare hike adjustments amid oil price hikes

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) assured transport groups that it will review all the pending petitions for fare hike amid the increasing operational costs for public utility vehicles that include the surge in the price of petroleum products.
LTFRB chairman Vigor D. Mendoza II said those that would be reviewed include the petitions of Manibela, which held a protest action on Wednesday, July 22, and the P10 fare hike demand of Piston.
“The LTFRB will recompute the appropriate fare adjustments,” said Mendoza during a meeting with transport groups, adding that the review was ordered by Department of Transportation Secretary Giovanni Z. Lopez.
During the meeting, Mendoza discussed the initial measures that the government is taking, including the continuous p10 per liter fuel discount to jeepney and UV Express units across the country.
Based on the latest data, a total of 87,000 PUV units already benefited from the program while more than 140,000 units were already enrolled in the program that gives every units P10 liter discount for a maximum of 150 liters per week.
In the same meeting, Mendoza said they are also eyeing the expansion of the coverage of the fuel discount to reach as many PUV units.
On the issue of fare hike, Mendoza explained that it is not easy to decide on the matter since a number of factors must be considered, including the impact of any amount of fare hike to the prices of basic goods and services.
“There are factors that will be taken into consideration such as the capacity of the riding public to absorb additional transportation costs and the overall inflationary effects of any amount of fare adjustment to the price of basic goods and services,” said Mendoza.
“What can be assured, however, is that instead of an interim adjustment given the price of petroleum products, the LTFRB will come out with a final resolution in the soonest possible time,” he stressed.
The meeting was attended by top LTFRB officials. Earlier, Mendoza also met with protesting Manibela members.
