First Gen powers more Araneta City sites with RE

Lopez-led First Gen Corp. is expanding its partnership with Araneta City Inc. (ACI) to broaden its renewable energy (RE) supply to four more developments in the Quezon City commercial hub.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 22, First Gen announced the signing of new power supply agreements (PSAs) with ACI to help decarburize its operations and optimize energy use across its 35-hectare (ha) mixed-use estate in Cubao, Quezon City.

Under the new contracts, First Gen will supply an estimated 3.4 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power from its 648-MW Unified Leyte geothermal power facility to four additional ACI properties.

These include the 30-story Cyberpark Tower 3 office building, 22-story mixed-use Aurora Tower, the remaining Fiesta Carnival arcade, and former Fiesta Carnival site, which is currently undergoing redevelopment.

The expanded deal builds on an earlier agreement signed by both parties in October last year, under which First Gen supplied 5.4 MW of clean energy from its hydro and geothermal assets in Nueva Ecija province and Bicol region to Ali Mall, New Frontier Theater, and Manhattan Gardens.

ACI senior vice president Antonio Mardo noted that the transition aligns with growing market demand, particularly from business process outsourcing (BPO) tenants seeking greener operations.

“We have been trying to tap renewable energy sources for the past years and we’re happy to be achieving our vision. Our BPO locators have been asking us to source RE. We look forward to growing our partnership with First Gen,” Mardo said.

Carlo Vega, First Gen chief customer engagement officer, emphasized the broader impact of the shift, saying that transitioning to clean energy serves both environmental and strategic purposes.

“Shifting to RE is not just doing good for the environment, but also a means to manage business risks. We thank the Araneta Group for growing with us and allowing us to be their partner as they progress in their sustainability journey,” Vega said.

The latest PSAs were made possible through the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) and Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), which allow end-users to choose their electricity suppliers.

Under RAP, ACI previously aggregated the power demand of more than 200 retail and service tenants, as well as over 9,000 apartments across 18 residential towers in Manhattan Gardens.

First Gen remains the country’s leading producer of RE, operating a combined capacity of more than 1,700 MW across 31 geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar power facilities nationwide. - Gabriell Christel Galang
