'Bakit Taguig lang?': Alan Cayetano asks why bailiwick is being singled out in ghost project issue

Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano questioned why the City of Taguig is now the main focus of the alleged ghost flood control projects probe.

In a Facebook live on July 19, Cayetano said he is baffled why his political bailiwick is being singled out after Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the department is now looking into the allegations raised by Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.

Earlier, Lacson flagged two suspected ghost projects in Taguig City, saying that initial findings by his team, showed a staggering number of slope protection and drainage projects - most of them costing P100 million each - with a combined value of some P2.085-billion.

Cayetano insisted that authorities should investigate all alleged “ghost projects” in the country instead of concentrating only on Taguig.

"Sabi nga ni Manong Chavit Singson, sa Ilocos daw meron. Ewan ko kung totoo o hindi. Pero ang tinitingnan lang ni Senator Lacson ay Taguig (As Chavit Singson said, there’s also ghost project in Ilocos. I don’t know if that is true or not. But Lacson is just concentrating in Taguig)," Cayetano pointed out. 

"Ba't hindi mo ipatawag isa-isa 'yan? Bakit sa Taguig ka lang nakatingin (Why won’t you call each of them? Why are you only looking at Taguig)?” he added.

Cayetano also said that in April, Dizon, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano, and officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) personally inspected several infrastructure projects in the city as part of the agency's monitoring efforts.

The senator said he is willing to be held accountable if any irregularities are proven in Taguig's flood control projects.

But Cayetano maintained that all projects should be examined fairly and that investigators should not single out one area.

"Integrity is very important. So, why not give integrity sa investigation natin sa flood control at sa lahat ng malalaking corruption issues (Why not give integrity to our own investigation on flood control projects and all other big corruption issues)?” he pointed out.

“Ngayon kasi, bad governance at ‘bend the law.’ Tapos tatakpan na lang sa maraming ayuda para wala na lang magtanong. Tapos kapag may nagtanong, ikulong na lang 'yan, (Because now, they resort to bad governance and ‘bend the law.’ And then they would cover it with so much financial aid so no one will ask. Then if someone asks, they will put him into prison),” Cayetano lamented.
