CEBU CITY – A mayor driving a motorcycle with no license plate figured in a collision on a national highway in Minglanilla town, Cebu.

The accident involving Dumanjug, Cebu Mayor Gungun Gica happened early Sunday morning, July 19, in Barangay Pakigne.

Dashcam footage of the incident has circulated on social media.

In the video, Gica was seen counterflowing when he rammed into a van which executed a U-turn. The incident happened in an area where a U-turn slot signage was mounted.

The identity of Gica was confirmed in a blotter report by the Minglanilla Police Station. The police report also indicated that the Ducati motorcycle driven by Gica didn’t have a license plate. Police also noted that the parties involved have amicably settled the accident.

Gica addressed the incident by issuing a statement on Tuesday afternoon, July 21.

“I was involved in a road incident while driving. I acknowledge my role in what happened and sincerely apologize to the owner and driver of the van for the inconvenience and damage caused,” said Gica.

Gica said he “committed to shoulder the full cost of repairing the vehicle, as well as the reasonable losses incurred during the period that it cannot be used.”

He confirmed that he is “Tiger” or a graduate of the Police National Police-Highway Patrol Group’s Executive Motorcycle Riding Course. Gica also apologized to fellow Tigers.

“As a member of the HPG Tigers, I likewise extend my sincere apologies to my fellow members and to everyone associated with the organization,” Gica said.

The mayor said the incident was a result of “my own actions and should not, in any way, be construed as a reflection of the HPG Tigers.”

“It does not reflect the organization’s values of discipline, responsibility, and road safety, which it consistently promotes and upholds. I remain committed to taking full responsibility for my actions and to resolving this matter through the proper process,” Gica said.
