- Former Sparkle artist James Graham, 19, shares his LGBTQIA+ journey after a personal message went viral online. The young actor once groomed for teen idol stardom opens up about identity, acceptance, and his message for young people and parents.
James Graham, 19, never planned for his coming out story to become a public moment.
The former Sparkle artist, who was once being positioned as a rising teen idol in Philippine showbiz, was surprised when a private expression of his true self suddenly gained widespread attention online.
It began when James posted a TikTok video on July 19, showing a more feminine presentation of himself while lip-syncing to Ace of Base’s “The Sign.”
The video carried a powerful message: “Start the new life you always wanted.”
Its caption encouraged people to live authentically despite fear or judgment:
“You don’t have to be scared anymore. People will judge you regardless of who you are, so just live your life to the fullest.”
Many interpreted the post as James’ official public coming out announcement.
But for James, the viral moment was unexpected.
“I’m still in shock because the account I’ve been showing the real me was initially just for me and my close friends who knew who I actually was,” he shared.
James revealed that he had already come out to his family and close friends in May.
“I was so scared, but the reason why I came out was because I got tired of pretending to be someone I’m not,” he said.
“I’m tired of pleasing everyone and trying so hard to force myself into a standard they expect me to be.”
Before his personal story became public, James was known as a young actor with the potential to become one of the next faces of Philippine entertainment.
He started modeling for clothing brands at age 10. At 12, he auditioned for ABS-CBN and landed his first television role.
One of his most recognized roles was in the 2023 primetime series “Royal Blood.”
As a young actor growing up in the entertainment industry, James experienced the pressure of fitting into expectations placed on him—especially as someone being shaped into a future matinee idol.
He recalled that he had always been feminine since childhood and faced discrimination because of how he expressed himself.
James shared that he began realizing he was different when he was around nine years old, but kept those feelings private until he was 16.
The first people he opened up to were his sisters who responded with acceptance.
He recalled being surprised when they told him: “We know.”
Despite the unexpected way his story reached the public, James said he now feels lighter and more free.
“Wala na yung bigat sa chest ko and I finally feel like I can express myself however I want,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude toward his fans and supporters who welcomed his honesty.
“Seeing all of them celebrating and being proud for showing the real me makes me feel seen and heard,” he shared.
For young people struggling with identity, acceptance, or the fear of judgment, James offered a message of courage.
“People may or may not like you, and it’s perfectly fine. You have yourself and you’re happy, healthy, and that’s what matters.”
He added: “You don’t have to be scared anymore, and even if you are, do it scared. Do it because you are resilient and brave.”
