Quezon City- Oh yes! Your favorite gossip girl is back in Manila and this time around I am reporting to you with extra chili oil because theater and film veteran Robert Seña recently celebrated his 62nd birthday in Ramen Butcher. I got a treat of two celebrations in one bowl: it was Seña's 62nd and it was also an informal press gathering for his much-talked-about new film from NDM Films, "Rob the Firipins." We had ramen, confetti, and chaos — the holy trinity.

The moment Robert walked in, the whole restaurant lit up, decades in Filipino theater and film will do that to a room.

Between spoonfuls of broth, I asked Robert how this movie came together.

He told me, "'Rob the Firipins' is actually ‘Love the Philippines’ with a Japanese accent turning ‘love’ into “rob” and ‘Philippines’ into ‘Firipins’. The idea for the film basically started with me hanging out with Njel de Mesa, Robert Quan and Anthony Ocampo. It eventually spiraled out of control hahaha! I suggested to Njel that we take a trip to Japan together, just to enjoy and maybe, just maybe, come back with a movie idea. What followed was less of a traditional shoot and more of a long, ridiculous, wonderful adventure with friends that happened to end up as a full feature film."

The premise is an alternate-reality Philippines : What if Japan never left after World War II and fully conquered the Philippines?

Said Robert, "Imagine instead of the Rizal monument, a Japanese hero will be there and Japanese flags will be in the jeepneys instead of our Filipino flags....”

He teased the tone as something that blends broad comedy with a surprising amount of heart, friendship and identity wrapped in a world that looks completely familiar and completely upside-down at the same time.

He hinted that the plot follows a tight circle of friends navigating this reimagined country, describing the whole experience of making it as one of genuine camaraderie with his co-stars and the rest of the cast.

And then, the birthday wish.

Robert put his chopsticks down for a moment — a rare serious beat in an otherwise giddy night — and turned reflective. I asked what he wanted for his 62nd birthday, and he didn't hesitate.

“My wish is not for me this time around, but for our country – I wish for unity. I wish that Filipinos can set aside their divisions to genuinely work together against corruption and the chaos it breeds. Change can't come from finger-pointing alone; it has to come from everyone pulling in the same direction,” he said.

The room went quiet for a beat — then Njel shouted "We're all in this together!"

The whole ramen shop applauded, complete with Robert's wife, singer and theater veteran Isay Alvarez, shouting "Mabuhay!"

Before wrapping up, Robert flashed his signature grin and encouraged everyone to catch "Rob the Firipins" when it streams in the NDM streaming platform — promising a movie full of laughter and plenty of very Filipino silliness, but also, underneath it all, a real sense of hope.
