3 Kent Carpenter shooting suspects test positive for illegal drugs

‎DUMAGUETE CITY – Three suspects charged in the fatal shooting of American marine biologist Dr. Kent Carpenter in Sibulan, Negros Oriental have tested positive for illegal drug use, a police official said Tuesday.

‎Capt. Stephen Jaynard Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, identified the suspects only by their aliases M.O., J.F., and C.D.

‎"The first two suspects were arrested after the crime was committed, while the third voluntarily surrendered to authorities later," Polinar said during a virtual press briefing.
‎
‎He said the drug test results will form part of the evidence to be presented in the robbery with homicide case already filed against the suspects. He did not say whether separate charges for illegal drug use would also be filed.

‎Polinar also disclosed that police have identified a sixth person of interest after he was named by the other suspects.

‎The case has been elevated to the court by the Provincial Prosecutor's Office, prompting police to withhold further details that could affect the proceedings.

‎Polinar also clarified that the brother of Carpenter's Filipino live-in partner is not among the suspects.
‎
‎Based on the police investigation and security camera footage, only five suspects were present at Carpenter's residence in Barangay Ajong, Sibulan during the attack on July 12. Three allegedly entered the house, while two were outside as lookouts.

‎However, one suspect later told investigators that a sixth companion was involved, though his specific role remains undetermined.

‎Meanwhile, the remains of the 73-year-old scientist have been cremated and will be brought to the Silliman University Church for the necrological service.
‎
‎Carpenter served as an adjunct professor at the Silliman University Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences and as a research affiliate of the Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management.
‎
‎A renowned marine scientist, he made significant contributions to the study of Philippine marine biodiversity. His research identified the central Philippines, particularly the Verde Island Passage, as the world's "Center of the Center" of marine shore fish diversity. (PNA)
