AMPOYOS
ILOILO CITY – An off-duty police officer was killed inside a karaoke bar in Pontevedra town, Capiz province past midnight on Monday, July 20.
The Pontevedra Municipal Police Station (MPS) identified the victim as Police Capt. Rian Fuentes Ampoyos, commander of the 1st Capiz Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC).
Ampoyos was reportedly shot and killed while responding to a commotion but an investigation found out that he was at the karaoke bar when the incident happened.
Police Regional Office-6 chief Police Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said that Ampoyos were among the off-duty cops invited by the karaoke bar owner to dinner on Sunday, July 19.
Tuaño, citing investigation from the Pontevedra MPS, said Ampoyos and colleagues were at the karaoke bar as early as 4:30 p.m. and discussed the peace and order situation.
As the night wore on, three men in another table had a commotion and the off-duty lawmen were told that one of them had a gun.
The off-duty police officers, including Ampoyos, attempted to pacify the situation. Ampoyos was walking towards the table of suspect William Paulino Deocampo when he was shot. Ampoyos was taken to the Bailan District Hospital where he was declared dead.
The suspect attempted to flee but was cornered and mauled by customers of the karaoke bar. Deocampo was taken to a hospital in Roxas City.
The PRO-6 condoled with the family of the victim. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, loved ones, and fellow police officers mourning this painful loss. We assure them that the Philippine National Police will conduct a thorough, impartial, and lawful investigation to ensure that justice is served,” the PRO-6 said.
