The military strongly denounced the grenade attack on a Philippine Army convoy in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur on Saturday, July 18, that injured five individuals.
In a statement, the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division said the attack carried out by unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants against personnel of the Army's 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion, 1st Scout Ranger Regiment occurred around 6:30 a.m.
“This senseless act of violence resulted in the wounding of two soldiers and three civilians. It further demonstrates the complete disregard of the perpetrators for human life and public safety,” the 6ID said.
Police said two motorcycle-riding suspects cut through the convoy in Barangay Poblacion, Shariff Aguak before hurling a grenade and fleeing. The explosion wounded two members of the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion and three civilians.
The attack took place despite the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, which has been in effect since July 16 for the upcoming BARMM parliamentary elections in September.
“Our soldiers were simply carrying out their sworn duty of serving and protecting the people when they became the target of this criminal attack,” the 6ID said.
“Such acts against our soldiers and innocent civilians, who deserve to live in peace and security, are unacceptable and have no place in a society striving for lasting peace and development,” it added.
Despite this, the 6ID said the incident would not affect the resolve of its troops to carry out their mission across the region.
“We assure the public that this incident will not diminish the resolve of our troops to accomplish their mandate of safeguarding the people and maintaining peace and security across the region,” it said.
The division also recognized the wounded soldiers for remaining committed to their duty.
“We commend the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of our wounded personnel, who remained steadfast in the performance of their mission despite the danger they faced,” the 6ID said.
“We likewise express our sincere concern for the injured civilians and pray for the speedy and complete recovery of all those affected,” it added.
Meanwhile, the military urged the public to help authorities identify those responsible.
“The 6th Infantry Division calls on the public to remain vigilant and to cooperate with authorities by reporting any information that may lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators,” it said.
