Seatbelts are such a routine part of driving today that most people fasten them without giving the action much thought. The simple click before setting off has become one of the most basic habits behind the wheel, yet it remains one of the most effective forms of occupant protection ever fitted to a car.

Across the history of automotive safety, few inventions have had an impact as broad or as lasting as the three-point seat belt. It gave drivers and passengers a practical way to restrain both the upper and lower body during a collision, helping reduce the risk of serious injury as cars became faster, roads became busier, and safety standards grew more demanding. Volvo Cars Philippines is marking the 106th birth anniversary of Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin, whose development of the modern three-point seat belt changed vehicle safety and helped establish one of the industry’s most widely used protective systems.

Born on July 17, 1920, Bohlin developed a restraint system that secured both the upper and lower body while remaining simple enough for occupants to use on every journey.

Volvo introduced Bohlin’s three-point seat belt in 1959. The design used a single continuous belt positioned across the chest and lap, providing better restraint than the two-point lap belts commonly used in vehicles at the time.

Rather than keep the technology exclusive to its own cars, Volvo made the patent available to the rest of the automotive industry. This allowed other manufacturers to adopt the three-point seat belt freely in the interest of public safety.

The design eventually became standard equipment in vehicles around the world. Volvo credits the invention with helping save more than a million lives globally, making it one of the most important safety developments in automotive history.
