The Philippine Blu Girls clobbered host Peru anew with a 13-0 four-inning victory to finish fifth in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage in Lima, Peru on Sunday, July 19 (Philippine time).
Charlotte Sales homered for the second straight game and went 3-for-3 with four RBIs for the Nationals, who closed out their campaign on a winning note in their battle for fifth place.
The Blu Girls erupted for 13 runs in the opening inning alone, sending 17 batters to the plate and pounding out 10 hits in a dominant offensive display.
Royevel Palma pitched for the Nationals in four innings, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out two.
It was an impressive performance for the Blu Girls despite missing on advancing to the playoffs after tiebreaks were applied.
The victory also provided the Nationals with valuable momentum ahead of its campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan this September where they finished fourth over the last three editions.
Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL) President Jean Henri Lhuillier lauded the performance of the squad.
“This was exactly the kind of finish our Blu Girls deserved,” said Lhuillier, also CEO of the team’s long-time supporter Cebuana Lhuillier.
“They showed tremendous resilience throughout the tournament, facing some of the world's strongest softball nations with courage and determination. To end our campaign with such a dominant performance speaks volumes about this team's character, talent, and potential. I couldn't be prouder of how they represented the Philippines, and I know this experience will serve as a foundation for even greater success in the years ahead,” he added.
The Blu Girls finished the opening round with a 2-3 win-loss records highlighted by a stunning 5-4 upset victory over world No. 3 Puerto Rico. Their other triumph came in their last game against Peru, 8-0, while losses came at the expense of Venezuela, 8-5, Japan, 4-0, and Great Britain, 5-0.
Japan and Puerto Rico topped the tournament, earning them slots to next year’s World Cup in Redcliffe, Australia.
