- Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz drew attention online after criticizing Sen. Pia Cayetano over the senator's remarks on the NBI's investigation into the 2019 SEA Games.
Celebrity-politician clashes are no longer confined to campaign sorties or television interviews. Increasingly, they are playing out on social media, where a single comment can quickly become a headline.
The latest to spark online discussion was former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz, who took aim at Sen. Pia Cayetano following the senator's remarks on the National Bureau of Investigation's (NBI) probe into the Philippines' hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
Speaking during a recent manifestation, Cayetano said she and her colleagues were not easily intimidated but knew when they were being singled out.
"Hindi tayo sensitive, sanay tayo dito. Pero alam din natin kung pinapatamaan tayo, di ba? Alam natin 'yon. Di tayo tanga," she said.
She also appealed to her fellow senators, saying, "I'm asking you, dear colleagues, 'wag tayong papayag."
Cayetano's remarks came as the NBI continues its investigation into the country's hosting of the 2019 SEA Games, where her brother, Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, served as chairperson of the organizing committee.
The NBI has maintained that the investigation is based on documents and information it has gathered and is not intended to pressure senators or influence the impeachment court. It also stressed that no final findings of liability have been issued against any individual.
Diaz later reacted to a social media post carrying Cayetano's remarks.
"You are KSP! Your voice is irritating grabe dapat ikulong itong taong ito! Madrama! Ugh," the actress and former beauty queen wrote.
Although the comment is no longer visible, screenshots quickly circulated across social media, drawing mixed reactions from netizens and reigniting discussion over the increasingly public exchanges between celebrities and politicians online.
As of this writing, Cayetano has not publicly responded to Diaz's remark.
