The Pasay City government joined the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's (MMDA) launch of the "Yes to Ayos" campaign on Thursday, July 16, reaffirming its commitment to promoting public discipline as a key component of environmental protection and flood prevention.
The campaign, which was held at Timoteo Paez Elementary School, gathered national and local officials, educators, and community leaders in a pledge to uphold cleanliness, orderliness, and responsible citizenship.
Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano said the campaign supports the city's ongoing environmental programs aimed at reducing improper waste disposal, which contributes to clogged waterways and flooding.
"This is a responsibility of each and every one as we collectively safeguard our streets and protect our city, nature, and our fellow Pasayeños," Rubiano said. "After all, we are all working toward our vision of becoming a smart and sustainable EcoCity."
Rubiano said that the city has been conducting regular coastal and estero cleanups and recently launched the Adopt-an-Estero/Waterbody Program to rehabilitate the Libertad Channel, one of the city's major waterways that plays a vital role in flood control and improving water quality.
Pasay Rep. Antonino Calixto stressed that environmental protection begins with individual responsibility.
"When every citizen becomes responsible and disciplined, avoids littering on the streets, we can ensure public safety and a better quality of life for everyone," Calixto said.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the "Yes to Ayos" campaign seeks to instill discipline, particularly among the youth.
"This 'Yes to Ayos' program aims to instill discipline among our fellow Filipinos, especially the younger generation," Artes said.
Meanwhile, MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III said discipline is the solution to many of Metro Manila's recurring problems.
"Even garbage alone causes flooding, which in turn leads to traffic congestion. Why is there trash on the streets? The answer is discipline," Torre said.
The campaign promotes simple but meaningful acts of civic responsibility, including proper waste disposal, following traffic rules, using designated pedestrian crossings, and observing orderly queues in public places.
