DAVAO CITY – The National University (NU) Davao welcomed on Friday, June 17, about 1,800 senior high school and college students as the pioneering batch of the university’s first campus in Mindanao.
The university formally introduced the students and faculty of each academic program during their first "Pasundayag" at SM Davao, marking the opening of the campus and the start of the school year.
NU Bulldogs men's volleyball middle blocker Obed Mukaba and UAAP Season 88 women's volleyball Rookie of the Year Sam Catanda inspired students by sharing their experiences.
Mukaba and Catanda encouraged students to stay focused, disciplined, humble, and committed to their goals. They urged them to trust their professors, who will guide them throughout their NU journey.
"To all NU Davao students, find your purpose, stay true to your dreams, and continue working toward your ambitions regardless of the challenges you may encounter," Catanda said.
NU Davao Executive Director Edwin Loma described the event as a historic milestone for the university, noting that the Davao campus is the institution’s 15th campus nationwide and its first in Mindanao.
SM City Davao Mall Manager Engr. Leah Delarmente said NU's arrival reflects the mall's transformation from a shopping and dining destination into a hub for learning and academic development.
"The partnership supports a shared commitment to make accessible, affordable, and quality education available to students in Davao City and other parts of Mindanao," Delarmente said.
She told the pioneering students that they would always be remembered as the trailblazers and builders of the campus legacy, even as NU Davao grows and produces future graduates.
Delarmente thanked parents for entrusting their children to NU and expressed confidence that the university would help students develop resilience, strive for excellence, and prepare for future success.
The program featured chants and presentations from different academic programs and SHS pathways, allowing students to introduce their groups and build camaraderie with their classmates.
Deans, program chairs, and faculty members were also presented to the senior high and college students as the mentors who would guide them throughout their academic journey.
Loma emphasized that the NU Davao community should treat itself as one family, with students, teachers, and staff supporting one another in both academic work and campus activities.
The opening program concluded with the formal declaration of the school year and a group photograph involving students, faculty members, and other esteemed guests.
