Meralco and Rain or Shine, two teams who got off to a wrong foot in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, aim to finally barge into the win column when they collide on Saturday, July 18, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Both suffering defeats against their lesser favorite foes in their respective openers, both squads are looking to quickly put their bids back on track during their 7:30 p.m. affair.
Setting up the table in the curtain-raiser is the intriguing clash between San Miguel and Terrafirma at 5:15 p.m.
Between Meralco and Rain or Shine, however, the Elasto Painters had a bitter pill to swallow after getting manhandled by Blackwater, 106-131, in the first game.
With ROS coming into the conference as one of the favorites especially after a semis appearance last conference, no one really expected the team to lose to Blackwater, more so, getting blown out by the Bossing.
“I’m disappointed. Natalo kami, but it’s on the way you lose, e,” said ROS head coach Yeng Guiao
“Masyadong malaki yung lamang, and sana nakadikit ka man lang and you give yourself a chance to win, medyo ok pa. Pero kami we don’t have a chance to win the game up until the end,” he added.
Aaron Fuller was the lone bright spot for ROS but he certainly needs more help from the rest of the team especially following the departure of team captain Gian Mamuyac and the injuries to Leonard Santillan and Felix Lemetti.
Meralco, meanwhile, after playing all-Filipino in its sorry 97-98 loss to Phoenix, will parade a new import in Antonio Hester who will be making his fourth tour of duty in the PBA. The Bolts have Jordon Varnado on the bench but he had to sit out due to a calf injury.
“We wanted someone who's familiar with our league,” said Meralco team manager Paolo Trillo
In the first game, it will be an interesting clash between San Miguel and Terrafirma, two teams which engaged in a blockbuster trade during the offseason.
It will be the first time that Beermen’s new additions Jerrick Ahanmisi and Paolo Hernandez will face their former team, in the same way, Juami Tiongson will also be facing his former teammates he won a championship with in the Philippine Cup.
