Former House quad-committee (quad-comm) overall chairman Robert Ace Barbers had told his countrymen to rise above the Chinese state media's racist and offensive portrayal of Filipinos as "monkeys".
Speaking in a press conference at the House of Representatives on Friday, July 17, Barbers described China Daily's depiction of Filipinos in connection with the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue as offensive, unacceptable, and contrary to the principles of mutual respect among nations.
“Such language has no place in responsible discourse and only fuels unnecessary hostility,” he added, referring to an editorial cartoon published on July 15, 2026 by China Daily.
He said that disagreements over territorial and maritime issues "should never be used to justify racial insults or attacks on the dignity of any people".
“The Filipino people will never be defined by insults,” Barbers underscored.
“Our response must reflect the values that distinguish us as a nation—dignity, unity, and an unwavering commitment to defend our sovereign rights,” said the House impeachment adviser.
The former lawmaker from Mindanao emphasized that the Filipino people have consistently demonstrated resilience, courage, and patriotism in defending the country’s sovereignty and national interests through peaceful and lawful means.
Barbers stressed that the WPS issue must continue to be addressed through diplomacy, adherence to international law, and constructive engagement, rather than inflammatory rhetoric that undermines efforts to maintain regional peace and stability.
At the same time, he argued that condemning racist remarks should not be interpreted as hostility toward the Chinese people. Respect for human dignity, Barbers said, must extend to all nationalities regardless of political differences.
He also urged public officials, media personalities, and social media users to reject discriminatory language and promote respectful dialogue, especially on issues of international concern.
