A message for young people

NIGHT OWL
To every young person reading this: do not be deterred.
The world may sometimes try to make you feel small. People may speak carelessly about the color of your skin, your height, your accent, the shape of your body, your hair, your clothes, your family, your neighborhood, or the way you express yourself. They may point at the very things that make you different and act as though those differences are weaknesses. Do not believe them.
You are not a mistake. You are not less worthy because you do not look, sound, move, learn, or live like someone else. The things that make you unique are not burdens to hide. They are parts of your story, and you have every right to carry them with pride.
If someone criticizes the color of your skin, remember that your skin carries history, beauty, strength, and belonging. If someone laughs at your height, stand as tall as your courage allows, whether you are the shortest or tallest person in the room. If someone mocks your accent, remember that your voice may hold more than one place, more than one culture, and more than one generation. Your accent is evidence that language has traveled through you.
If someone comments on the roundness, thinness, softness, or shape of your body, remember that your body is not an invitation for cruelty. It is your home. It helps you breathe, play, think, dance, rest, hug, create, and grow. Treat it with care, and do not let another person’s narrow idea of beauty decide how you feel about yourself.
You will meet people who do not understand you. Some may judge before they listen. Some may laugh because they are insecure. Some may try to dim your light because they have not yet learned how to protect their own. Their behavior may hurt, but it does not define you.
You are capable of many things. You can learn skills that once seemed impossible. You can solve problems, build friendships, create art, ask brave questions, help others, change your mind, begin again, and discover gifts you do not yet know you have. Ability is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like practicing one more time, raising your hand even when you are nervous, apologizing when you are wrong, or getting back up after disappointment.
Real strength leaves room for others. Defend yourself without becoming cruel. Speak clearly when something is wrong. Find trusted adults, friends, teachers, coaches, or family members who will listen and stand beside you. Asking for help is not weakness; it is wisdom.
There may be days when pride feels difficult. On those days, borrow courage from the people who love you. Remember every challenge you have already survived. Write down what you like about yourself. Celebrate small victories. Look in the mirror and speak to yourself as you would speak to a dear friend.
Most of all, never shrink to make others comfortable. You belong in classrooms, on stages, on teams, in laboratories, in libraries, in leadership, and wherever your dreams may take you. Walk forward with your skin, your height, your accent, your body, your name, your talents, and your story.
Your future is wider than the opinions of people who cannot see your worth. Keep learning, keep dreaming, and keep becoming. The world needs your ideas, your laughter, your courage, and your unmistakable voice.
Carry them all with pride. They are not obstacles to becoming who you are. They are part of who you already are.
