One person was killed and seven others were injured after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) rammed four vehicles along the northbound lane of EDSA near Oliveros Drive in Quezon City early Friday morning, July 17.
CCTV footage showed the SUV first slammed into a pickup truck before hitting a taxi and two motorcycles before overturning.
The impact threw the riders of the two motorcycles onto the road.
Police said one of the SUV's occupants succumbed to injuries at about 11 a.m., while the seven injured were the SUV driver and another passenger, the taxi driver, and the four riders of the two motorcycles. All were rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment.
Pickup truck driver Marites Timosa said the black SUV first struck her vehicle before crashing into the taxi and the two motorcycles, a sequence later confirmed by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Traffic Sector 1.
Police Lt. Jason Santoceldes, commander of QCPD Traffic Sector 1, said there were indications that the SUV driver had been drinking, but investigators are still waiting for an alcohol breath analyzer (ABA) from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to determine whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
The crash caused heavy traffic along the northbound lane of EDSA in Balintawak before authorities cleared the wrecked vehicles and restored the flow of traffic about an hour later.
The QCPD Traffic Sector 1 is continuing its investigation into the incident.
