Newly appointed Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Dr. Jose Brittanio “Brix” S. Pujalte Jr. has gained the backing of various health organizations and medical groups, which described him as a seasoned public health leader capable of steering the agency.
Pujalte, a veteran orthopedic surgeon and career public health administrator, was appointed on July 13, taking over after Teodoro Herbosa resigned as head of the agency due to “medical reasons.”
Among these organizations are the Philippine College of Surgeons, the Philippine Orthopaedic Association, where Pujalte served as its President, and the Philippine Dental Association.
The Philippine College of Surgeons said his appointment is a source of pride for the organization since Pujalte was a former Regent of the group.
“You have exemplified distinguished leadership, unwavering integrity, and an enduring commitment to advancing the surgical profession and improving the health of every Filipino,” said the group in a statement.
“The Philippine College of Surgeons reaffirms its full support and steadfast commitment to partner with the Department of Health in promoting excellence in surgical care, patient safety, surgical education, workforce development, and the successful implementation of healthcare reforms that will benefit our people,” it added.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Orthopaedic Association pledged its support of Pujalte to strengthen healthcare delivery in the country.
“We are confident that your leadership, expertise, and commitment to public service will guide the Department of Health (DOH) in addressing current and emerging health outcomes, and we ensure accessible, equitable, and quality health services for all,” it said.
Also, the Philippine Dental Association expressed its eagerness to collaborate with the new DOH Secretary to “create healthier smiles and healthier communities.”
“We look forward to a harmonious and productive partnership with the Department of Health in advancing oral health promotion, empowering communities through preventive oral healthcare, and ensuring that quality oral health services become more accessible to every Filipino,” the group said.
Other government and civic organizations likewise welcomed the new DOH Secretary, such as the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC)’s Professional Regulatory Board of Nursing, which expressed hope that Pujalte’s leadership will prioritize preventive healthcare, strengthen primary care, improve hospital services, invest in the nursing workforce, uphold nurses' welfare, and advance the implementation of the Universal Health Care Act.
The Rotary Club of Manila and Tondo Medical Center also extended their congratulations and support to the new DOH Secretary, vowing to work closely with the agency to build a stronger, more resilient, and healthier Philippines.
Prior to his appointment, Pujalte had served as the Medical Center Chief of the Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC) since July 14, 2014. Under his leadership, the POC opened a new six-story hospital building in 2022, providing patients with access to modern orthopedic diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitation services through PhilHealth benefits under the Universal Health Care Act.
He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital in 1990 before entering the Philippine Orthopedic Center as an orthopedic resident in 1994.
Also, he served as a medical columnist for the Manila Bulletin from 1998 to 2021 and was president of the Philippine Orthopedic Association in 2009.
