As the Philippine music industry continues to evolve through streaming platforms, independent releases, social media, and emerging technologies, the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP) is strengthening its efforts to prepare the next generation of Filipino music creators.

On July 11, FILSCAP gathered hundreds of aspiring songwriters, musicians, producers, and music enthusiasts for the FILSCAP Master Lecture Series 2026 at Cinema 1 of Trinoma, creating a platform where participants could learn directly from some of the country's most respected music professionals. Due to overwhelming public interest, the event was moved to the larger Cinema 1 venue and welcomed 346 participants, making it the highest-attended Master Lecture Series to date.

Opening the program, FILSCAP Corporate Secretary Kedy Sanchez underscored the organization's continuing commitment to developing Filipino music creators by providing opportunities to learn from accomplished industry practitioners and inspiring them to pursue their creative journeys. The lecture series explored the essential elements of building a sustainable career in music, from songwriting and production to artistic identity and copyright.

Renowned arranger and producer Marlon Barnuevo encouraged aspiring arrangers and producers to develop the discipline of listening, emphasizing that every creative decision should always serve the song and the artist. Drawing from decades of industry experience, he reminded participants that technical excellence must always support musical storytelling.

Award-winning songwriter Jungee Marcelo shared practical insights into his songwriting process, describing the chorus as the emotional heart of a composition. He reflected on publishing his first song at just 14 years old and recounted the story behind his breakthrough hit Hataw Na, inspiring participants to write with a compelling opening, a clear perspective, and an emotionally rewarding conclusion while finding joy in the creative process.

Singer-songwriter Sarkie Sarangay, frontman of Silent Sanctuary, highlighted the importance of authenticity in today's music landscape. Reflecting on the changing industry, he noted how digital platforms have opened greater opportunities for independent artists compared to the traditional "pay-to-play" era, encouraging aspiring musicians to remain genuine in their artistry. He concluded his session with a performance of Sa'yo and a heartfelt reminder: "Mahalin niyo talaga ang music. Kung talagang gusto niyo siya, mamahalin din niya kayo pabalik."

Complementing the creative discussions, FILSCAP General Manager Atty. Mark Thursday Alciso addressed one of the most important yet often overlooked aspects of music creation: copyright. He explained that ownership in collaborative songwriting depends on the agreement among its creators, underscoring the importance of establishing clear communication and mutual understanding from the very beginning of any creative partnership.

More than a series of lectures, the FILSCAP Master Lecture Series 2026 reflected the organization's continuing investment in the future of Original Pilipino Music by equipping aspiring creators with both the creative and professional knowledge needed to navigate today's music industry.

The event forms part of FILSCAP's broader initiatives to educate, empower, and support Filipino music creators beyond collective rights management.
